Yom Kippur - Rabbanite Misconceptions
The way the Rabbanites have widened the meaning of the phrase, "you shall
afflict your souls," in order to include in it the prohibition of other
things, by applying it to other biblical instances of the word "affliction"
alone, without the addition of the word "soul" is unjustified. These additional
prohibitions include the prohibition of anointing the body with oil, wearing leather shoes, and washing with water.
Do they not admit themselves that the penalty of being cut-off applies solely
to eating and drinking?
